ArchitectureIsJunk x landfill exhibition proposal
Landfill is an experience constructed by graduate students pursuing a Masters in Architecture at SAIC. An extra-curricular study of architectural typologies and model making displays of a mock-world ceased in time through the potential in everyday objects. Architectural elements are embedded in inanimate objects as a departure point towards evoking different senses. A child-like curiosity that expands the mind past an object's preconceived use. It embraces curiosity, and excludes the constructive norm. Familiarity comes to us in Chicago and its buildings, identifying building context and known structural elements such as columns, doors, and windows. Objects have a known, single use when come across in the built environment, but this installation begins to question and redefine the mindset of familiarity. The hindered state of these objects reconstruct the portrayal of structure in various forms while leaving room for the tourists. It attracts attention towards neglected objects, and increases the awareness around life's material discards and, ultimately, sustainable practices.
This world is not a direct depiction of the Earth as we experience it, but rather a process of representation the objects create at the time of discovery. Three aspects make this exhibition, the Tourist, the Stalled State, and The Landfill. These bring awareness to the silenced state of objects to cast light onto the shadows of society. The Tourist is the visitor of the society, becoming part of the exhibition as they maneuver and observe the space. The Stalled State is a preview of our domain through a lens of found objects, showing our viewpoint where society could stem towards. Last, the Landfill aspect is shown in all objects in the room. Some are recognizable by the Tourist and their known use of it, while others completely re-constructing their familiarity to society in alternate forms. Through these notions, this exhibition will help reveal an alternate prospect of our living state, and become aware of potential notions of society as we progress with our framed mindset of objects in this artificial
this installation begins to question and redefine their familiarity towards users. Their hindered states reconstruct the portrayal of structure in various forms, and attract attention towards their original negligence. A peak in curiosity allows the experiencer to form their own narratives of the object, and ultimately increase the awareness of life’s material discards transformed through sustainable practices.
This exhibition has a direct connection with the environment outside of SAIC. The literal nuts and bolts from society slowly find their way in our paths, instinctively casted aside and ignored. As they are ignored, fusion with the natural interpretation of society begins to encompass the object, lasting for elongated durations of time, forgotten. The question is then brought to the surface; if we did not intentionally seek out and rescue these objects, how long would they have been in their stalled state? Their original, designed function is neglected, and cannot serve another purpose in the eye of those choosing to ignore and identify it as trash. The architecture redesigned and built living in the space itself are made of 100+ various objects found discarded in our personal spaces and exterior spaces. All objects used in this exhibit are non-hazardous, non-volatile, odorless, and have all been cleaned and decontaminated. Any sharp edges have been buffed and smoothed out, and overall objects not suitable to be used/cause harm to humans were completely negated in this project.
