Expanding SAIC’s footprint in the historic loop district, this student housing facility is an expression of two centuries of architectural design. The original Century Building (right) is a testimony to early modernism and rise of tall buildings! The juxtaposed ETFE addition as a supportive structure intended to expand the footprint of the building and the school’s engagement with the city of Chicago. With economic intent of being easily disassembled after its utility.

programming / return of investment

Considering the prime location of the lot. Futuristic return of invest played a vital role in the programming of The Artisan. Level 1 dedicated to public retail, including a cafe, art / supply store, and transitional drive for outdoor events. 2nd floor gallery space for The Art Institute of Chicago in Collaboration with SAIC. The 3rd and 4th levels adhere to student life and the school. The unique blend of architecture gives 2 distinct living styles that residents get to choose from levels 5-14 with a state-of-the-art studio workspace.

From the beginning I wanted to show the endeavored impact that the students who attend the Art Institute who aim to expand their individual and collective footprint on the world.
